Innovation through
global partnerships
With Coartem Baby, Novartis, together with the Geneva-based Product Development Partnership Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), developed the world's first malaria therapy specifically designed for newborns and young infants. The development took place within the international PAMAfrica consortium, co-financed by EDCTP and Sida. The clinical trial was conducted at several sites in Africa, with the participation of the Swiss TPH and the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania.

Swiss material technology
with global impact
Switzerland-based Vestergaard develops innovative technologies for malaria prevention. With PermaNet Dual, Vestergaard has developed a next-generation mosquito net that uses two active ingredients to specifically counter growing insecticide resistance. Following a WHO recommendation, the technology was scaled up together with the Global Fund to improve access in malaria-endemic regions.
From Swiss start-up
to global innovation
Basel-based start-up MOMM Diagnostics is developing innovative diagnostics for pregnancy complications that can help reduce maternal mortality, particularly in low-income countries. The company is supported by the Swiss innovation ecosystem, including Innosuisse, Venture Kick, and a world-leading life sciences network.

Geneva as a catalyst for market access
Roche's collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) on the prequalification of diagnostics paves the way for their procurement through the Global Fund and other international programs. For example, HIV diagnostics from Switzerland were adopted into national health programs worldwide, improving access to reliable diagnosis for millions of people.

Swiss SMEs also benefit from global partnerships: together with the Geneva-based Concept Foundation and UNFPA, Ferring Pharmaceuticals (Saint-Prex) is working to prevent life-threatening postpartum hemorrhage — an example of how international cooperation paves the way for Swiss innovations to enter global health programs.

beyond pharma
Syngenta (Basel) develops innovative active ingredients and insecticides to combat disease-carrying insects. The products are used worldwide in programs to prevent malaria and other vector-borne diseases, making an important contribution to controlling disease-transmitting mosquitoes.

Why now
Now is the time to shape Switzerland's future role in global health. As Switzerland prepares its International Cooperation Strategy 2029–2032, it will determine the role that global health will play in the country's foreign, innovation and economic policy.
Switzerland is defining how it will safeguard its long-term competitiveness as a global hub for pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. The links between international cooperation, global health and the country's innovation ecosystem deserve greater attention.
International Geneva is facing increasing global competition. The presence of the WHO, the Global Fund, Gavi and numerous other global health organisations provides Switzerland with a unique competitive advantage. Preserving this position requires a clear commitment to global health.
